"sometimes we just need a good scream"

For any Canadians who will be voting in the upcoming election, I urge you, no I implore you, to vote for the NDP.  Throughout the last several years while the Conservative government has been in power, he has undermined the democratic process of Canadians -and therefore limited our capabilities for real change, he has shown his inability to work WITH other Canadians as evidence by his unwillingness to compromise on the federal budget, and has greatly increased the levels of income inequality within the country at the expense of the poor.  The Conservative government does not work in your interests, it works in the interests of raising the economic output of Canada by any means necessary, which in this case has been and continues to be in the polarization of wealth for the rich.  Vote New Democrats, because it is the moral thing to do.

As somewhat of an extension of my last post, I intend to theorize on happiness.

Thursday nights are bar nights, my fellow political science students and I head to the pub on campus,at 5:30, to often continue the discussions we had been having in our four hour seminar.  This week we had been talking about social constructivism, which in short is saying that all manner of things are socially constructed, and that through consensus by many, our ideas gain legitimacy.  Well that was all fine and dandy, however the conversation turned to modern ideals of success, much like what I had last posted about, wherein I put my spin on things.

Essentially the theory I’ve been working on is that happiness is simply a state of mind, that can be recreated through certain external or internal stimuli.  Therefore in our modern consumer culture, what often makes people happy is the acquisition of goods, whether that be new clothes, new electronics, or what have you.  However this type of material happiness, I would dub as an empty happiness, as without the acquisition of these material goods, this feelings does not come into being.

However on the flip-side, I’d like to turn the attention to internal happiness.  I believe that any person with full cognitive capabilities, is able to induce upon themselves a state of happiness independently of any situation.  This I believe can be done through rationalization.  For example, by looking at the situation of one who has lost their job, although this is a situation which is in many cases not preferable, one can change their outlook on the situation.  By looking at the loss of the job and saying, well this will give me a new opportunity to pursue what I’ve actually always wanted, or alternatively to look at what you do have, such as family and a good social circle, you come to realize that the loss of your job really becomes less significant.

Though admittedly, that was a bit of a crude explanation of my theory, it is all I will post on here, as I’ve come to realize that this blog is both unread, and for many, uninteresting.  However, I’ve decided by adding pictures of random cute things I may one day get noticed…so here goes nothing.

 Cute animals.

Success should never be measured by the balance you hold in the bank, or the things you have; but by the person you are, the ideals you uphold, and the company that you keep.

Education, like love, is a fickle thing.  As I educate myself about the problems of the world, I bear witness to the atrocities and the injustices committed by people from all walks of life, be it from the beggar to the tyrant.  Nevertheless however, I experience every day new reasons for optimism.  I could talk about the democratic revolution of the middle east, as most who follow the media have done and continue to do, but even here at home.  Today I received a message from someone close to me, and it read the following:

  • “I’m starting to think that making little pay isn’t such a big deal, as long as I feel happy…like volunteering, I really love it!”

It’s these little things that give me hope that the world we live in, isn’t quite so dark.  There is always a reason to be happy, no matter how drab life gets.  Even on the worst of days, life generally awards you with the little tokens of gratitude.  So I guess where I’m going with this is, don’t say FML.  Let’s face it, your life is not fucked, you’re just being melodramatic. (Unless of course, it is fucked.  In which case by all means, say it if it gives you release.)

Life is only what you make of it, nothing more, and nothing less.

I’ve come to the conclusion that PostSecret is a waste of time.  It’s either depressing, pointless, or full of wimps.  (But generally, all three.  See above.)
